The Future of Job Searching

Mailing resumes?

These practices are about as useful in a modern job search as a mimeograph machine is in a modern office.

Today’s job searches are largely conducted online – often from the comfort of job seekers’ own homes. In fact, according to research from Glassdoor.com:

  • Nearly half of job seekers say they use mobile devices specifically to search for jobs at least once a day.

  • 89 percent of candidates believe a mobile device is an important tool for job searching.

And the future of job searching is even faster, friendlier and more fun. Here are three mobile-friendly ways to scroll, click and swipe your way to professional opportunities:

Switch. Dubbed “the Tinder of job searching,” this app can eliminate a lot of the time-consuming legwork associated with applying to jobs. Instead of searching for openings, crafting custom cover letters and tweaking your resume for each position, Switch allows you to swipe left or right to indicate your interest in a job opening.

If both you and the employer swipe right, Switch considers this a match. But instead of scheduling dinner and a movie, you can schedule a phone call and an interview. Switch is extremely new and unproven, but it takes a novel, more personal approach to connecting you with potential employers.

JobAware. This app uses Indeed’s job board to facilitate the process of applying for jobs that fit your skills. Helpful features include:

  • Handy Auto Fill. JobAware instantly populates common job application fields, saving you a ton of time and frustration.

  • Job Prioritization. The app also helps you prioritize opportunities into three categories – dream job, second choice and third choice – to keep your search efforts focused.

  • Paste Doc. This allows you to easily insert a cover letter or resume directly into your job application.

  • Connection with LinkedIn. With just a few clicks, you can see if you know anyone else who works for the company – to get the “inside scoop” on corporate culture, or that personal introduction you were looking for.

Glassdoor. This app features a unique secret weapon others lack – reviews directly from current and former employees. In addition to helping you size up an employer’s available position, Glassdoor also provides valuable insights about:

If you use this site in your job search, take negative reviews with a grain of salt. Obviously, multiple scathing reviews could indicate a pervasive organizational culture problem, but a single one may not necessarily be a cause for concern.
