How Telecommuting Benefits the Environment
  • 0 Comments

Telecommuting has great benefits for employers and employees alike. Employees report feeling happier and more productive, and it promotes talent retention and recruitment within the company. But letting your employees work from home is also a great way to help the environment too! Here’s how.

Reduces carbon footprint. Letting employees work from home is a great way to help the environment. Telecommuting reduces vehicle miles traveled per year by more than 35 billion and saves almost 2 billion gallons of gas. It also reduces traffic gridlock in bigger cities and cuts down on commuting time for workers, meaning more time for productivity and less time feeling rushed and aggravated after a particularly rough commute. Other savings include a reduction in pollution from road work and new office construction, and according to a CEA commissioned study one day of telecommuting saves the equivalent of up to 12 hours of an average household’s electricity use.

More community parks. Employers that opt for virtual teams don’t need office space, which means less of a need for the development of office buildings and the space could be used for parks or other community buildings instead. Virtual workers also save businesses $11,000 per year per worker in various ways including electricity, parking, heating and cooling, and office space costs.
