It's Anti-Boredom Month...Why Do We Care?

anti-boredom montheditedIt’s anti-boredom month. Why do we care? Because one cause of boredom in the workplace is disengagement. A disengaged employee isn’t fully absorbed into their work. They lack that desire to go above and beyond. In the end, negatively impacting company productivity and success.

At Corps Team, founder and CEO, Allison O’Kelly sends out occasional internal reminders of why we do what we do. “We are all so lucky to have such purpose driven jobs yet sometimes the minutia or a particularly tough day/week/month keep us away from the joy we should each have as we are creating meaningful opportunities for professionals. With each placement we make, we change the life of the person accepting the job, his/her family, the lives of the teams in which they work and the companies in which they work.  Whether you are an owner, business development, recruiter, administrative support, marketing, corporate team member…, your work is part of the reason we are able to make this impact.”

In his TED talk, Simon Sinek explains how leaders inspire action. Sinek shares there are 3 components: what, how and why, and how those who start with the why have greatest success with leading.

In staffing, there are many companies that provide the what, or same service as us. We all find candidates to fill current job openings. We can even go as far to say much of how we go about this is the same…learning about company needs, posting the job opening, screening candidates from application to interview.

Where we may differ is the why. It is what makes us unique. It is what helps someone connect with our company, or a member of our team, and choose to work with us over another company. The why is personal. For some it may be that the company was founded by a woman, or that they could relate to Allison’s struggle to find work-life satisfaction in a traditional workplace, or that they were talking to someone that sat in their same position before and knew the challenges they faced.

Sharing your why is crucial to sales, yet equally so when hiring and managing. Sinek sums it up nicely in his talk, “If you hire people just because they can do a job, they'll work for your money, but if they believe what you believe, they'll work for you with blood and sweat and tears.”

With so much on everyone’s plate, it is tempting to think there isn’t enough time in our day to worry about if our why’s align, if our team is or isn’t engaged, or to write off boredom as a given. If we can minimize employee disengagement, we can inturn, hopefully minimize boredom, and remove any limitations for success (as individuals or as a company).Need some ideas to spark everyday engagement?
