As a manager, you want to promote work-life balance among your team members. They are likely to remain engaged and productive when they feel rested and ready to start the day. Your employees tend to perform their best and remain with your organization long-term when they have enough time for outside interests. Plus, they are likely to get along with their teammates and you because they feel a sense of control over their lives.

Provide a Flexible Work Schedule

Employees who have flexible starting and ending times tend to be more productive. For instance, they can arrive at or leave the office in order to avoid rush hour. Also, because your staff members can fit in work around their personal responsibilities, they are better able to focus on what they are doing at any given time. Plus, if a staff member has to work late one night, they can come in later the next morning to make up for it.

Offer Remote Work

Let your team work remotely at least one day per week. They can drop off and pick up the kids from school, buy groceries, and handle vehicle maintenance while fitting in their work responsibilities. This frees up time on the weekend to spend with their families and pursue personal interests.

Include Paid Time Off

Staff who have paid time off can spend time away from the office without having to account for their activities. They do not have to decide how, when, and why they should use vacation days or sick days, resulting in greater job satisfaction. By not allowing the carryover of paid time off into another calendar year, your employees are encouraged to take time off for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Allow Unpaid Leave

Let your employees take unpaid time off for an extended period to fit their life needs. For instance, they may have to care for a premature baby who is hospitalized, nurse a parent with a serious illness, or settle a late relative’s estate. Or, your team members might want to extend parental leave, participate in graduate school classes available only during the day, or explore relocation with their spouse without leaving their current job.

Model Work-Life Balance

Promote the behavior you want to see in your team members. For instance, do not answer calls or emails after work hours or on days off. Also, delegate your duties to be covered when on vacation. Show that these are your expectations for your team members as well.
