Tips from a Recruiter: The World of Technical Recruiting

All jobs are not created equal and that is definitely the case in the Information Technology industry. There are Software Engineers, Project Managers, Architects, Designers, Developers, Analysts, Infrastructure, Networking, Tech Support, and Management roles. It’s a world of jobs in itself!

Navigating through Tech recruiting can be challenging, just like any job search, but we’ve tapped our Senior Director of IT Staffing – Kirsten Overlee – to provide insight into what her team looks for when hiring a candidate.

Here are some tips from an IT Recruiter:

  • Progression: Show how you’ve grown as a technology professional and learned new skills that translated to higher level roles. If you started on the help desk and are now a security guru, recruiters want to see your progression.
  • Consistent Work History: Whether the jobs have been permanent or contract, showing consistency is key. A steady work history is appealing to any employer, so moving from project to project can be a good thing.
  • Communication Skills: Effectively communicating across the business is essential and technology professionals work cross-functionally with many non-tech individuals and teams. The ability to relay your message in a clear, understandable way is a huge plus.
  • Technical Certifications: Earning a certification highlights your special skills, shows others you are committed to the profession, and keeps you current on relevant tools and programs. It can also earn you a salary bump or potential promotion!

The same rules for any job seeker also apply with IT roles – provide descriptive and readable resumes, ensure proper interviewing preparation and etiquette, and know how and when to follow up post-interview.

Hopefully, these tips allow you to crack the code of landing an IT position.
