Tips from a Recruiter: Why Post-Interview ‘Thank You’ Notes Matter

If you are a candidate that has completed an interview, the importance of sending a ‘thank you’ note afterward cannot be undervalued. It is hard enough to get invited to an interview, nonetheless, secure a job offer. Sending a message of gratitude and reiterating your interest in the position through a thoughtful post-interview note is quick and easy – and it might just give you the edge.

A few of the reasons include:

  • Leaving a Lasting Impression: Stay top of mind to a hiring manager. A well-crafted thank you note is your chance to reiterate your enthusiasm for the position and remind them of your key qualifications. It not only leaves a positive impression but also reinforces your interest in the role.
  • Expressing Professionalism: A note demonstrates your professionalism and etiquette. It highlights your ability to follow through, pay attention to detail, and communicate effectively. This can contribute to shaping the employer’s perception of you as a courteous and appreciative candidate.
  • Addressing Missed Points: If there were questions you could have answered better during the interview, the thank you note is an opportunity to address those concerns. Politely clarify or expand on certain points to ensure you leave no doubts about your qualifications.
  • Building Relationships: Strong professional relationships are crucial in any industry. A note of appreciation for the time and effort invested by the interviewers helps build that.

As a Recruiter, if I interview two candidates that are similar in experience, education, communication skills, and personality – a thank you note could tip the scales in your favor.
